black and gold

waiting for a dinner of tuna kedgeree as i sit here typing this. sheri, our golden labrador is outside in the garden, and a newcomer, a gorgeous black dog (we're not sure what breed) is sleeping soundly by our front door.
he came to our gate on tuesday and asked to come in. just gazed at us with lovely brown eyes till we caved in. what can we do? we're suckers for cute dogs. so we took him in, and brought him to the vet to find out what was wrong with his front right paw (he can't put too much weight on it -- it hurts him). they took an x-ray and found out that it's most likely a muscle problem since his bones are fine. we suspect he got hit by a car, since he's terribly afraid of car horns and sprints like crazy when he hears them (he can really sprint, even on three legs). he's now on painkillers.
then we tried to find the owners, and a lady who lives on our street identified him as the dog that used to guard the house at the end of the street. that house is uninhabited, and the owners live somewhere nearby. we're not sure how well cared for this darling dog was before he was released. he wandered the streets for a while before coming to our gate, it's plain to see.
so now we have him. we're taking as good care of him as we can, thinking of a name for him and trying to introduce him to sheri. she's being friendly, but he's still cautious.
he's such a tame little dear. it's ridiculously hard to think of a good name for him. if you have any ideas, comment! it would be a great help.
i'll try to post a picture of him soon. in the meantime, i'll be drinking tea, devouring tuna kedgeree, reading the first harry potter book for the umpteenth time and, of course, thinking of a name for the little darling.
